Cooking and food

Food in Gothic 1 Remake heals you between fights. Potions heal you during them. There are 11 cookable recipes across two stations: the campfire for grilling meat and the cauldron for stews. Most food restores HP over time, but four cauldron recipes also restore mana: Mushroom Stew, Root Soup, Seaforest Brew, and Syra's Baron Stew. Cook what you kill, eat on the road, and save potions for mid-combat emergencies.

Campfire and cauldron

  • Campfire. Grill raw meat. No extra ingredients, no skill required. Found throughout the Colony. This is your day-one healing source.

  • Cauldron. Cook stews from combinations of water, vegetables, herbs, and meat or monster drops. Found at camps and some larger settlements. Recipes need you to know them before you can cook them.

What to cook first

  • Grilled Meat and Grilled Scavenger Meat. One raw ingredient each, made at any campfire. Kill a scavenger or a sheep, cook the drop, eat it. This is how you stay topped up between fights for the entire game.

  • Meatbug Ragout. Meatbugs are slow and everywhere. The ragout needs a cauldron plus a Hellcap mushroom, but it's reliable once you know the recipe.

  • Minecrawler Soup. If you're clearing the Old Mine, you'll have mandibles. One mandible plus water at a cauldron. Worth cooking on-site if there's a cauldron nearby.

The named stews (Brock's Stew, Syra's Baron Stew, Seaforest Brew, Dragonsbreath Stew) are more expensive to make but heal more. Some also restore mana, making them worthwhile for casters. They need rarer herbs and specific combinations.

The Dragonroot overlap

Dragonroot is used in both Root Soup (cooking) and the Elixir of Magic Energy (alchemy). The Elixir is a top-tier mana potion. If you're a mage, don't cook your Dragonroot. If you're pure melee and will never cast a spell, the soup is fine. When in doubt, save it for alchemy.

Vendor food

12 food items can't be cooked and don't appear as recipe ingredients. You buy or find them.
